CBN, CBC, THCV… The Cannabinoids Everyone Will Be Talking About Soon

Beyond THC and CBD, cannabinoids like CBN and THCV are catching researchers' attention. Discover these promising new molecules and their potential benefits.

Cannabis contains over 140 different cannabinoids, yet only two—THC and CBD—have taken center stage. However, lesser-known compounds with unique effects are now emerging in scientific circles. Here’s a closer look at the up-and-coming cannabinoids that could redefine the future of cannabis and its uses.

1. CBN (Cannabinol): The Sleep-Enhancing Cannabinoid

CBN forms naturally when THC degrades due to exposure to light or air.

🛌 Studied effects:

  • Gentle sedative (promotes relaxation)
  • Potential aid for insomnia and sleep disorders
  • Anti-inflammatory properties

⚠️ Non-psychoactive, but typically found in very low concentrations in fresh cannabis flowers.

2. CBC (Cannabichromene): A Potential Anti-Inflammatory

CBC is a little-known cannabinoid but can be present in high levels in certain hemp strains.

🧠 Effects under investigation:

  • Anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving
  • May influence neurogenesis (growth of new brain cells)
  • Synergistic action with CBD and THC (the “entourage effect”)

📌 Growing interest in medical research, especially in combination with other cannabinoids.

3. THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin): The Unexpected Energy Booster

THCV shares a similar structure to THC but behaves quite differently.

Potential effects:

  • Suppresses appetite (unlike THC)
  • Boosts alertness and focus
  • May help lower blood sugar → currently studied for type 2 diabetes

⚠️ Mildly psychoactive at high doses, but distinct from THC’s classic “high.”

4. Other Molecules to Watch

  • CBG (already covered in a previous article): anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective
  • CBDV: similar to CBD, studied for neurological conditions (epilepsy, autism)
  • Delta-8-THC: a gentler THC variant, controversial in the U.S. due to legal gray zones

5. What’s the Legal Status in France and Europe?

These emerging cannabinoids are often in a legal gray area. In France:

  • Only CBD without THC is legally allowed for sale
  • Other cannabinoids are subject to interpretation, and generally restricted to medical research or tightly controlled imports

Cannabis isn’t just THC and CBD. Molecules like CBN, CBC, and THCV may soon take the spotlight in medical research, wellness, and targeted nutrition. Their potential is vast—but still requires scientific validation and legal clarity. It’s a space worth watching closely.
